Biography
Steven Herbert is a Research Associate in the Department of Computer Science, University of Oxford and a Teaching By-Fellow at Churchill College, University of Cambridge. He is interested in all aspects of quantum information and computation and his specific current research interests concern how to efficiently compile quantum algorithms, expressed using the quantum circuit model, onto a networked quantum computer. This research includes the efficient distribution of entanglement in quantum networks, which is expected to find broader application in the fields of quantum computing, security and communication. He also has significant experience in mesh network organisation and routing.
Steven received the MA (cantab) and M.Eng. degrees from the University of Cambridge Department of Engineering in 2010, and the PhD degree from the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory in 2015. Following the submission of his PhD thesis he remained at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory as a Research Assistant from May to June 2014 and retained an affiliation as a visiting researcher until 2016. From January 2015 until July 2016 he worked at Blu Wireless Technology, during which time he was a co-inventor of five patents. Subsequently, in September 2016, he was a Research Associate at the Institute for Digital Communications, University of Edinburgh, researching adaptive waveform design for active sensing systems. From February until December 2018 he was a Research Associate in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge, and also in February 2018 he was elected a Teaching By-Fellow at Churchill College, University of Cambridge. He commenced his current position in January 2019.
