Abstract

Description: The Oxford Ethical Web and Data Architecture (EWADA) project (ewada.ox.ac.uk) explores how to re-decentralise the power on the web and provide individuals with more data autonomy and transparency. EWADA works closely with the Solid project (solidproject.org), an open-source project started in MIT, to investigate how to build such an ethical web for everyone. One area we are looking into is to support Gig Workers (such as Uber driver) gaining more transparency about how their pay rate is calculated by large platforms and how they can gain more autonomy.

Prerequisites: In this project, you will explore what tools and technologies are already out there to support gig workers free from the monopoly of large platforms. You will then design and implement a Solid-based prototype to give gig workers more control of their data and allow them to gain value from their data without losing control of data privacy. You will evaluate the project by assessing the robustness and soundness of the prototype. For able students, you could also work with Gig workers to assess the usefulness of the system.
