Visiting Professor Joël Ouaknine awarded €7.5m ERC Synergy grant for project aiming to revolutionise the algorithmic theory of discrete linear dynamical systems and related formalisms

Visiting Professor Joël Ouaknine has been awarded an ERC Synergy grant worth €7.5m over six years. Professor Ouaknine is Scientific Director at the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems (MPI-SWS) in Saarbrücken, and will lead the project with Professor Florian Luca (MPI-SWS and Stellenbosch University) and Professor Valérie Berthé from the Institut de Recherche en Informatique Fondamentale at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique.

Professor Ouaknine worked with the department as University Lecturer, Reader, and Professor of Computer Science, leaving in 2021. The project, ‘Dynamical and Arithmetical Model Checking’ (DynAMiCs), lying at the interface of mathematics and theoretical computer science, aims to revolutionise the algorithmic theory of discrete linear dynamical systems and related formalisms, tackling longstanding open problems in the field.
