Internet of Things (IoT) at UFSCAR: Projects and Opportunities

Talk Abstract:

This talk discusses the main challenges and opportunities around IoT (Internet of Things) for the present Brazilian scenario. A long term strategic plan on IoT developed by the goverment considers verticals and horizontals of applications. Some undergoing research projects on IoT at UFSCAR, aligned with this plan, will be presented and discussed along with the opportunities in the industry and the big challenges in this area.

 

Speaker's Bio: 

Prof.Dr. Fredy J. Valente – Ph.D. from Southampton University (1995 – Electronics & Computer Science), M.Sc. in Applied Physics (1991) and a B.Eng. Electrical Engineering (1987) – both from USP (University of Sao Paulo) – Brazil. 

I have worked as a lecturer in Computer Science at USP(1996-97). CTO and Co-Founder of S&V Consulting (1997-2004) a company focused on developement and software services around contactless smart cards (NFC) technology for corporate physical access control solutions and and public ticketing transportation systems. As a visiting researcher at University of Southampton (2005), I have worked with grid and pervasive computing applied to Smart Supply Chain solutions using EPC/RFID technologies. From 2006 to 2015, I have worked as a CTO and Founder of COSS Consulting developping and providing Smart Supply Chain tracking and tracing solutions based around EPC/RFID and IoT technologies. 

At present, I am a Prof. Dr. at the Federal University of Sao Carlos - UFSCAR in Brazil, where I am the coordinator of the IoT Research Group - IoT Security, Communication Technologies (e.g. LoRaWAN), IoT Middleware Strategies, Sensor Fusion and IoT applications (e.g Smart Cities / Smart Health) are areas in which we have research going on.
