Research Associate on foundations for probabilistic programming and quantum programming

Fixed-term contract until 31 March 2025

Grade 7: Salaries in the range of £34,308 - £42,155 p.a. with the potential to under-fill at Grade 6 with salaries in the range of £30,502 - £36,386 p.a.

We are looking for a full-time postdoctoral researcher, who will be reporting to Sam Staton, to investigate foundational aspects of probabilistic programming and quantum programming.

The appointee will develop foundational aspects of probabilistic programming and quantum programming, for example, developing category theoretic foundations for synthetic measure theory, or using algebraic effects and meta-programming to analyze quantum programming. The exact scope of the research will depend on the skills and experience of the successful candidates.

Candidates should have a PhD (or be very near completion) in computer science or mathematics with a strong background in category theory and measure theory, evidenced by published papers that substantially use these methods.

The primary selection criteria include the abilities to conduct and complete research projects (as witnessed by peer-reviewed publications), and contribute ideas for new research projects; and writing skills.

Whilst the role is a Grade 7 position, we would be willing to consider candidates with potential but less experience who are seeking a development opportunity, for which an initial appointment would be at Grade 6 (Grade 6: £30,502 - £36,386 p.a.) with a title of Research Assistant with the responsibilities adjusted accordingly. This would be discussed with applicants at interview/appointment where appropriate.

All applicants must complete an application form and submit a CV and supporting statement.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on 19th April 2023. Interviews are expected to be held in late April or in May.
