CAPTCHAs, the good, the bad and the ugly

Ivan Flechais ( SEP )
CAPTCHAs (Completely Automated Public Turing Test To Tell Computers and Humans Apart) are finding their way into a vast number of online services. They are typically used to stem the flow of automated bots signing up for services or spreading spam in online forums, and the variety of CAPTCHAs on offer is ever growing. The question is, however, does using a hard artificial intelligence problem as the basis for distinguishing people from computers actually address the problem, or is it simply the easy way out for service providers? This talk will provide a light hearted exploration of CAPTCHAs and the issues that surround them, and hopefully generate some discussion about the possible alternatives.
